How can i get a better tan?

I'm very pale and i do have freckles and i vary rarely catch any colour when out in the sun..i burn quite easily so going out in strong sun without any protection is impossible ... are there any tricks or tip you can give me that will help me get a good tan and help keep my freckles under control? thanks :)
