I have no clue how much darker i will go on holiday?

Hi, I'm going on holiday soon, however I have absolutely no idea how dark i will go with a tan as every time i go away it seems to vary & i haven't been away for a while so i dont want to buy a foundation which is too light/ dark and also i don't tend to tan all over, so i dont know what to do. I was thinking of buying a translucent foundation just so it will even me out a bit, and leave myself to tan naturally as which ever way i tan will be natural anyway... do you think this will be ok? Is max factors creme puff in translucent any good if anyone's used it?.
