Blackberry messenger not working?

I've just bought a new Blackberry and my friend wanted to talk to me on Bbm. I gave her my pin but her request was never recieved. So she gave me hers, that still didn't work. I'm on orange but I dont have a deal with them it's just a payasyougo sim card. Does this effect it? Thankyou:) <3
