If I'm in Canada, can I BBM someone who is in the United States?

OK, I'm buying the new Blackberry Curve 3G today and I am planning on getting BBM. I was wondering if it would cost money to BBM someone who is in the United States. I live in Canada. Any help is appreciated, thank you in advance!
